Shelley Brown is the President of Bromelin, a consulting firm that helps organizations with their human resource needs. Her team assists with the management of the small things - like payroll, benefits, and compensation - to the big ones such as talent management, performance management, and succession planning. Shelley’s philosophy to show care, not only to the clients but also to her own employees, contributes much to her company’s success.

Shelley joins me today to share how she transitioned from being the Vice President of the Human Resources Department of a multinational pharmaceutical company for the Canadian division to being her own boss of an HR consulting firm. She explains how she reconciled careful planning and taking a leap of faith as she built her company and her team. She also shares some of the programs their company has created that have benefited multiple organizations and have helped other people from the other side of the world.

“If people care about the business and are willing to put out that discretionary effort, how can you not be successful?” - Shelley Brown

Shelley’s Advice for Future-Proofing Your Business:

  • Take the time not only to write the business plan but be very clear on what your value proposition is and what your 7-second elevator speech is.
  • Make caring one of the foundations of your business.
  • Take advantage of the diversity of your employee population.
  • Engagement has to be a constant and planned effort.
  • Make sure your onboarding process is comprehensive; otherwise you’re not going to get the most out of your employee for the next six months.
  • Do townhall meetings and solicit feedback from your employees regularly so they would feel that their voice can be heard.
  • As a leader, make sure that you are accessible, honest, and transparent.
  • Let everybody participate in the solution of the problem.
  • Everyone wants to know they’re doing a good job and wants to be notified if they’re not.
  • Look at succession and succession planning.
